Missouri Requires Uninsured Coverage but Not Underinsured

Two drivers can cause the exact same crash and leave you in very different positions. One carries no insurance at all. The other carries just enough to be legal, which may be far less than a serious injury requires. Missouri treats those two situations differently, and your policy may, too.

The uninsured driver

No policy, no coverage to pay your injury costs. Uninsured motorist coverage is designed for this, and Missouri requires it on every auto policy.

The underinsured driver

A policy exists, but its limits run out before your injuries are fully addressed. Underinsured motorist coverage fills that gap, and in Missouri it’s optional.

What Missouri’s Required Coverage Does and Doesn’t Do

  • It focuses on bodily injury to you and your passengers
  • It generally does not repair your car, which is where collision coverage comes in
  • It only applies when the at-fault driver has no insurance, not when they simply have too little

Why the Optional Piece Deserves a Look

Missouri’s minimum liability requirements are modest compared to the realities of a serious injury. A driver can be fully legal and still carry limits that disappear quickly after a significant crash on I-64 or Olive Boulevard. Without underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy, the difference may have no clear source.

Not All UIM Is Written the Same Way

Some underinsured policies reduce what they pay by the amount the other driver’s insurer already paid. Others sit on top of it. The wording matters, so it’s worth asking exactly how yours works.

A Two-Minute Policy Check

  1. Find “Uninsured Motorist” on your declarations page and note the limits
  2. Look for a separate “Underinsured Motorist” line
  3. If it’s missing, ask whether adding it fits your household
  4. Confirm collision coverage is in place for damage to your own car
